It’s no secret that various cannabinoids derived from hemp have become very popular on the market, including THC-JD. But what exactly is THC-JD, and is it safe to use? Let’s cover some basics around what this cannabinoid is, what effects to expect, and the current legal status of it.

What is THC-JD

THC-JD, also known as tetrahydrocannabioctyl, was discovered back in 2020. Not much is known about it still, but it is naturally occurring in hemp unlike some other cannabinoids on market such as THC-O and HHC. Since incredibly low amounts of THC-JD is found in hemp, most THC-JD products come from a process of cannabinoid conversion.  Due to cannabinoids such as CBD and THC share the same base structure it is relatively safe for converting these more abundant cannabinoids into others such as THC-JD.

Just like THC, THC-JD is psychoactive, meaning it will induce a high when consumed. So, what are the major differences between these two cannabinoids? For starters, THC-JD has a longer carbon chain. THC only has a five-length carbon chain meanwhile THC-JD has an eight-length carbon chain. The longer carbon chain is believed to be the reason for a stronger effect, making THC-JD more potent than THC with some claims of it being near 19x the strength.  Due to lack of research compared to other new cannabinoids such as THC-P which is 30x stronger than THC, it’s difficult to pin point how accurate the strength claim of THC-JD truly is.

Potential medical benefits of THC-JD

On paper THC-JD sounds safe, and its always great having more potent options when looking into cannabis products, but what are the medical benefits? Due to a lack of research, there are no definite benefits, but there are many anecdotal claims. Some of these claims include that the psychoactive effects are relaxation, happiness, euphoria, and calmness similar to THC indica highs. Though this does mean adverse effects such as anxiety, lethargy, and paranoia can happen, so it’s best to take THC-JD in small amounts at first. Keep in mind it is more potent! Due to these potential effects, if it bodes well with you, it could possibly be a great remedy for insomnia, and potentially other mental illnesses such as depression.

If you are looking to try THC-JD, it is important to discuss with your doctor beforehand if you are taking any other prescriptions. It is always best practice to only purchase from verified shops carrying products that have a Certificate of Analysis or COA for short. These COA’s are 3rd party lab test results proving the lot number your product is from contains the cannabinoids it claims it does, and no other unwanted metals or pesticides.

Is THC-JD Legal?

Technically under the current Farm Bill of 2018, all hemp products derived from hemp with 0.3% THC or less, and products themselves that contain 0.3% THC or less are legal. Since at the time of the bill passing, most of these new hemp derived cannabinoids that cause psychoactive effects were not known and were not on market. Just alone now in 2023, many States have started to outlaw these new cannabinoids due to their psychoactive effects, with many States such as Florida having new laws coming into effect as soon as July 2023. Also keep in mind that a new Farm Bill for 2023 is currently in development and should be passed at some time this year. It is most likely that the federal government will outlaw ALL psychoactive cannabinoids including THC-JD and others that are being derived from hemp. In the meantime, many shops are still selling these products before the laws change. It is incredibly important you do self-research before making a purchase as laws on State and Local levels can change fast, and shops don’t always stay on top of law changes.
